Calima, storms and heavy rain: what does home insurance pay, and when does the Consorcio step in?
Autumn brings wind and heavy rain to the islands, with calima in between. Who pays for what is set out in your policy and in the Consorcio rules. These are the thresholds we work with.
Wind: Allianz pays from 90 km/h
Allianz home policies issued since September 2021 cover wind damage from gusts above 90 km/h. The English translation of the policy says "Wind, when it reaches speeds of over 90 kph". It is proved with the official weather report, which we obtain for you. If that is not enough, it is sufficient that the same storm damaged other well-built houses within 500 metres.
Older policies: the 500-metre rule
Policies issued before September 2021 usually give no wind speed. Allianz pays when the storm also damaged other buildings, trees or property within 500 metres. Message us and we will check which wording you have.
Heavy rain: over 40 litres per square metre per hour
Rain damage is covered above 40 litres per square metre per hour. Water coming through the façade or roof is covered from the Extra level, once the cause has been repaired. Slow damp is not rain damage.
Calima: dust is not an insured event
The Allianz home policy does not mention calima, neither to cover nor to exclude it. Only the events the policy lists are covered, and sand or dust are not among them. Cleaning the terrace or pool is not a claim. If the wind tears something off during calima at more than 90 km/h, that is storm damage.
Trees in the garden
A tree falling within your property is covered only if the storm also caused damage within 500 metres, up to 1,000 euros per tree and 25,000 euros per claim. Rain, frost, hail and snow on plants are not covered.
When the Consorcio pays
Extraordinary events are paid by the state Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros: volcanic eruption, earthquake, storm surge, extraordinary flooding and atypical cyclonic storms. These include gusts above 120 km/h and tornadoes; tropical cyclones and cold Arctic storms have their own thresholds of 96 and 84 km/h averaged over ten minutes. Official bodies such as AEMET certify it. Roughly: between 90 and 120 km/h Allianz, above that the Consorcio.
Consorcio: no excess, but a waiting period
On homes the Consorcio deducts no excess and pays up to the same sums as your policy; if they are too low, it pays no more either. New policies have a seven-day waiting period, unless you switch insurer without a gap.
After the storm
Take photos before you clear up and stop the damage from getting worse. Report it within seven days. As your intermediary we can report a Consorcio claim for you.
What this means for you
- Take photos before clearing up.
- Report within seven days, easiest by WhatsApp to us.
- We obtain the official weather report.
- If your policy is older than 2021, ask us which wind rule it has.
